Once I had a dream
It scared me every night
A Giant Snake and Godzilla
Were fighting in a Cave
I had been spelunking alone
I was trapped by the monsters high on a ledge
Every time their tails smashed closer
I screamed in anguished dread!
I must have been ten years or so,
The dream came almost every night
How could I change it
Or ESCAPE my awful plight?
Finally, the Answer Came,
From my own mind it rhymed and chimed:
If I could stay asleep,
Yet know it was a Dream
My nightmare would unwind
I tried and tried, every night,
Before I was smashed by the Monsters' Great fight
To know I only dreamt the fright
But every time I knew it was a dream
From the dream I would awake
Until, never giving up hope,
I finally stayed asleep,
Yet knew it was a dream
and King Kong came and rescued me
And carried me outside
There was a beautiful sunset
And I never dreamt that dream again!
Years later, in a valley called Hanakanaiki,
Camping with my friends on Hawaii's northern shore
With Haleakala visible across the ocean's roar
I saw the same sunset
On the ocean's blue horizon!
