One of the Founders of General Systems Theories.
"IONS is deeply grateful for the recently received gift
of a 4000-volume library, amassed over several decades, from the estate of
long-term Circle member and IONS advocate, the late Fred Bernard Wood, Ph.D.
(1917-2006). Facilitated by his two sons, Frederick Bruce Wood, Jr. and Peter
Mead Wood, the family chose IONS for the library donation because we share
Fred's cross-discipline perspective. We are pleased, and we know that Fred Sr.
is ecstatic, that these books are now available to the IONS staff, members, and
visitors, says son Fred Jr.
Since at least the 1950s, Fred Sr. was interested in
higher levels of consciousness, and the relationships between the brain,
knowledge, mind, and soul. He followed the development of the concept of the noosphere—the
sphere of human experience, values, and consciousness involving information,
knowledge, mind, and soul at higher levels—and IONS came up on his radar
screen from the outset,
says Fred Jr. (Both the words noetic and noosphere come from
the ancient Greek.)
In an oral history interview with the Story Corps
(CPB/Library of Congress) conducted only six days before he passed on, Fred Sr.
cited articles published in Shift magazine on the relationship between
creativity, humanistic values, fetal development, and the body-mind-soul
connection. IONS served as one of Fred Sr.'s trusted sources of
outside-the-box, yet credible, scientific information on the frontiers of
consciousness research, says son Fred Jr.
Frederick Bernard Wood was a lifelong advocate and
practitioner of the system sciences. In 1954 he was a founding member of the
Society for General Systems Research now called the International Society for the Systems Sciences. He presented
scientific papers throughout the United States and in Toronto, London, and
Budapest, and participated in study missions to Russia and Cuba. Dr. Wood was
also founder and president of the Computer Social Impact Research Institute of
San Jose, CA, and officer of the Earth Regeneration Society of Berkeley, CA.
He was a long-time advocate of socially-responsible use
of science and technology, especially computer technology, and published a
series of working papers called 'Communications Theory in the Cause of Man.'
He
focused on global climate change beginning in the mid-1980s, and then on
advanced electromagnetic applications beginning in the early
1990s—including potential new energy devices that could produce energy
from the active physical vacuum (or quantum vacuum) more cleanly and cheaply
than fossil fuel energy sources.
His 4000-volume library donation is combined with
additional books pulled from storage on brand new shelving to create a fresh
library in the Research and Communications building that will be used for
scientific, research, and educational purposes. The Institute of Noetic
Sciences appreciates so much the generosity of this gift. Thank you Wood
family! "
